It can. Muscle mass tends to decline with age while body fat can increase, which may shift your BMI over time even without major changes in weight.

BMI Calculator
What is BMI?
BMI, or body mass index, is a screening measurement that estimates body fat based on your height and weight. It’s been a go-to metric in clinical and wellness settings for decades, largely because it’s fast and requires no lab work or equipment.
Think of it as a rough map, not a diagnosis. It gives you and your care team a quick reference point, a place to start the conversation about where your health is now and where you want it to go.
How to Calculate BMI
The math behind BMI is simple: Multiply your weight (in pounds) by 703, then divide by your height in inches squared.
Or, skip the math entirely. Our online BMI calculator does the work for you. Enter your height and weight, and you’ll have your number in seconds.
What Does my BMI Number Mean?
Your result places you in one of four general categories:
- Below 18.5 — Underweight
- 18.5 to 24.9 — Normal weight
- 25 to 29.9 — Overweight
- 30 and above — Obese
These ranges are a reference. A BMI in the “overweight” range doesn’t tell you why it landed there, and a “normal” number doesn’t automatically mean everything is in balance. What matters most is what you do with the information. Our telehealth team is here to help you figure out what that next step looks like, whether you’re looking to lose weight, optimize hormone levels, or just feel better in your body day to day.
What BMI Can’t Measure
BMI treats everyone of the same height and weight identically, regardless of muscle mass, bone density, age, or how fat is distributed across the body. An athlete with significant muscle might land in the “overweight” category while someone with low muscle and higher fat stores might read as perfectly “normal.”
It doesn’t account for where fat is stored. Visceral fat, which accumulates around the midsection and internal organs, has different health risks than fat stored elsewhere. BMI can’t see any of that. It’s a single dimension of a much more layered picture, which is exactly why it works best alongside other assessments, not as the only one.
BMI is a Starting Point
For the patients we work with, BMI tends to be the beginning of the conversation, not the conclusion. It’s a useful way to establish a baseline before starting a weight loss program, and it can help track meaningful changes over time as treatment progresses.
What moves the needle isn’t the number itself. It’s having access to the right support, a responsive care team, treatment options that are clinically sound, and a process that doesn’t make you jump through hoops to get started. At Rehydra+ Wellness, that’s exactly what we’ve built.
Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions before you get started? Good. Telehealth should feel clear, not confusing, and these answers can help you know what to expect.
Is BMI accurate for everyone?
Not equally. BMI’s accuracy varies based on sex, ethnicity, muscle mass, and age. It’s most useful as one data point among several, rather than a standalone measure.
Can BMI predict health risks?
It can flag potential areas of concern, particularly at the higher end of the scale, where links to cardiovascular risk and metabolic issues are well-documented. That said, a high BMI doesn’t guarantee poor health, and a normal BMI doesn’t mean you have a clean bill of health.
How often should I check my BMI?
There’s no strict rule, but checking every few months gives you a reasonable window to observe trends over time.
Does BMI differ for men and women?
The calculation itself is the same, but body composition differs between biological sexes. Women typically carry more body fat at the same BMI compared to men. Some clinicians factor this in when interpreting results.
